“(The case) is a travesty of justice, and I hope things turn out in Brendan’s favor,” said Marsha Levick, deputy director and chief counsel of the Juvenile Law Center in Philadelphia.

Dassey and his uncle, Steven Avery, were convicted in 2007 of killing Halbach and are serving life terms. Their cases were featured in the popular Netflix docu-series “Making a Murderer.”

The Juvenile Law Center is among six organizations that filed a brief with the Supreme Court in support of Dassey as of Monday. Amicus, or friend-of-the-court, briefs are filed in appellate cases by non-litigants with a strong interest in the subject matter. The briefs are intended to advise the court of relevant information about a pending case.
