December Events: Juvenile Homicide Sentencing CLE; Webinars on Transition Planning for Youth with Disabilities, Education for Kids in Care

Juvenile Law Center,

Here at Juvenile Law Center, we're gearing up for a busy December. Below are details on three not-to-be-missed educational events taking place next month.

CLE: Juvenile Homicide Sentencing Post-Miller v. Alabama and Death Penalty Mitigation

After the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Miller v. Alabama banning mandatory life without parole sentences for juveniles, Pennsylvania passed Act 204 in 2012, which requires new specialized sentencing hearings for juveniles convicted of homicide post-Miller

This CLE will train lawyers to handle these cases and will address areas of overlap between death penalty mitigation and post-Miller juvenile sentencings, making it ideal for practitioners who are handling either type of criminal case.

When: Monday, December 9, 2013, from 9 AM - 4:30 PM
Where: Pittsburgh, PA

Webinar: Transition Planning for Youth with Disabilities in the Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Systems

For most youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, the transition to adulthood is challenging. Youth with disabilities face even more challenges as they transition. Early planning, informed by knowledge of the legal requirements of transition planning and the eligibility requirements for adult services and supports, helps ensure success.

This free webinar, hosted by Juvenile Law Center Supervising Attorney Jenny Pokempner, will provide child welfare and juvenile justice professionals with information and strategies to improve transition planning for youth with disabilities and special needs. It will highlight information about services and supports that are available for youth in the child welfare system; services that may be available to them as they transition (like SSI and Medicaid waivers), and strategies for planning for housing and other services for youth with mental health needs.

The webinar is based on a set of tools Juvenile Law Center developed to help youth with disabilities and child welfare professionals and advocates as they plan for the transition to adulthood from the child welfare system. Learn more and download those tools here.

When: Tuesday, December 10, 2013, from 12 PM - 1:30 PM EST

Webinar: Education for Kids in Care: What Judges and Attorneys Need to Know

Nationally, nearly half of youth who age out of foster care will not complete high school on time. Juvenile Court Procedural Rules in Pennsylvania ensure that education is addressed throughout the adjudicatory process, so youth can stay on track to graduate.

Juvenile Law Center and Education Law Center-PA are hosting a free webinar to provide information on how you can protect and advance the education rights of your clients through effective courtroom practices. Topics to be covered include an overview of juvenile court rules focused on education, special issues for youth in congregate care, and graduation and transition planning, among many other issues. This webinar is targeted to family court judges, attorneys, court staff, and other child-serving professionals.

When: Monday, December 16, 2013, from 12 PM - 1 PM EST
