In re Adam C.

Juvenile Law Center, in collaboration with the Children & Family Justice Center at the Northwestern University School of Law, and other amici, filed an amicus brief in the Appellate Court of Illinois, First District. We argued that mandatory lifetime sex offender registration applied to children violates a child’s due process rights and the constitutional bans on the infliction of cruel and unusual punishment under both the Illinois and U.S. Constitutions.

The Illinois Appellate Court rejected our arguments, finding instead “no punitive intent behind the [mandatory lifetime sex offender registration] provisions.
