What "school" is really like in juvenile justice facilities.

Last week, President Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) into law. A major overhaul of federal education legislation, the brand new law includes important provisions for youth in the foster care and juvenile justice systems. The ESSA’s protections support educational success for justice-involved youth; the law is a critical step towards ensuring all youth get a good education, regardless of where their classroom is (in a public school or a juvenile justice facility) or if they’ve had contact with the juvenile justice system. 

Over the past year, our youth advocates in Juveniles for Justice have worked to raise awareness and improve policies so young people in the juvenile justice system get the education they deserve. We asked the advocates about their education during and after placement in a juvenile justice facility. Here's what they told us:
