APA Handbook of Psychology and Juvenile Justice (Chapters)

The APA Handbook of Psychology and Juvenile Justice explores the evolving contributions of psychology to the juvenile justice system.  Juvenile Law Center Chief Counsel and Deputy Director, Marsha Levick, and Supervising Attorney, Jessica Feierman, co-authored Chapter 2 of the Handbook, “Children in the Justice System: The Legal Framework.” Feierman also co-authored Chapter 25, “Trauma-Informed Juvenile Justice Systems and Approaches.”

The Handbook includes chapters focusing on: relevant law, human development, patterns of offending, risk factors for offending, forensic assessment, interventions, and training and ethics.  The book highlights how advances in science can inform tasks and decisions that affect the juvenile justice system, from daily decisions made by judges to far-reaching rulings from the United States Supreme Court; from risk- and needs-assessment of youth to legislative policy affecting all juveniles in a given jurisdiction; from training for professionals and service providers to enhancing public safety via carefully designed, effective programs for justice-involved youth.

The Handbook also provides relevant information from different specializations within psychology including: clinical, cognitive, developmental, educational, family, forensic, neuropsychology, and social psychology, as well as perspectives from other behavioral sciences (sociology, criminology), natural sciences, and insights from other mental health professionals.
