Juveniles for Justice, one of our youth advocacy programs, includes young people who have been involved in the juvenile justice system and offers the youth an opportunity to assess the system's strengths and weaknesses, and then develop and implement advocacy projects to improve the system.

Juveniles for Justice selects new Youth Advocates and a new issue each year, starting in early fall.

Access to Higher Education for Youth in the Juvenile Justice System

For their 2015-2016 project, Juveniles for Justice youth advocates focused on access to higher education for justice-involved youth. From their personal experiences in the juvenile justice system, the advocates knew that there are few opportunities and not enough support for youth in the system to pursue college. The advocates developed a set of recommendations for juvenile justice facilities to help youth prepare for and attend college.

Improving Educational Outcomes for Youth in the Juvenile Justice System

During their 2014-2015 project year, Juveniles for Justice focused on the educational needs of youth in the juvenile justice system.

The Youth Advocates identified problems that they experienced while they were in the juvenile justice system – from being forced into alternative schools to the low quality education provided in juvenile justice facilities to difficulties transitioning from juvenile facilities back into their neighborhood schools – and created a series of recommendations to address these issues.

Expunging Your Juvenile Record

In 2013-2014, Juveniles for Justice Youth Advocates focused on promoting awareness of the impact of juvenile records and how to expunge, or destroy, them. They created an informational card for youth with information about the expungement process, and also created this video to spread awareness of the importance of expunging juvenile records. Public defenders at the Defender Association of Philadelphia will be using this video in trainings and presentations for attorneys.
